Johannesburg - Julius Malema’s ally, Vhembe ANC Youth League regional chairman Rolivhuwa Nelwamondo, believes he was a target of an assassination attempt because of his Friends of the Youth League association.

Days after organising buses to ferry people from the region to a night vigil in Polokwane in support of Malema, four armed men forced their way into his family home at Makwarele, Thohoyandou, and sprayed bullets into the living room.

The walls were left with holes, and used bullet cartridges were left scattered on the floor.

Nelwamondo said on Wednesday his younger brother had escaped unhurt after the assailants interrogated him about his whereabouts.

Nelwamondo’s other younger brother was forced to lie down and had his body pressed against the floor with feet before the “Pedi-speaking” men left, he said. Nobody was hurt, he added.

Nelwamondo, who said he believed the incident was politically motivated, has laid criminal charges.

“I think it is politics because we were busy organising buses for people to come to support Julius. I opened a case on Tuesday of attempted murder and housebreaking,” he said.

Nelwamondo is the parliamentary officer in Limpopo Economic Development MEC Pinky Kekana’s office. He is close to Malema.

Nelwamondo said he had been attending a regional ANC meeting at the Vhembe district offices on Tuesday evening when he realised he had missed calls from one of his younger brothers. When he returned the call at around 7pm, he was told to rush home.

Limpopo police spokesman Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said they were investigating two counts of attempted murder.
