Durban - The Inkatha Freedom Party claimed that a ward councillor whom police said had died in a car crash was in fact shot.

Alson Mzwakhe Nkosi, the IFP candidate’s 44-year old ward candidate for Ward 3 in Abaqulusi Municipality, died on Thursday night.

IFP party chairman Blessed Gwala said in a statement released on Monday that Nkosi had been shot as he was returning home from a family function on Friday.

However, police spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Gwala said that according to police records Nkosi succumbed to his injuries after the car in which he was travelling near the coal mining town of Hlobane rolled late on Thursday night.

According to Zwane, apart from Nkosi, a 16-year old boy died at the accident scene and police have opened a case of culpable homicide.

“There were no sign of any shooting at the scene. A post-mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death,” said Zwane.

Gwala said: “We condemn this brutal killing of our member in the strongest possible terms. We do not know the motive for the killing as yet and we demand that Task Team that has been set up by Premier Willies Mchunu to investigate the killing of ANC members, must also investigate the killing of Mr Alson Nkosi.”

He urged the government to bring those responsible for Nkosi’s death to justice.
