Pretoria – It is believed that veteran State prosecutor Gerrie Nel will be joining civil organisation AfriForum following his resignation from the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).

AfriForum CEO Kallie Kriel earlier said "We cannot confirm or deny it. " But the organisation has called a press briefing for 3pm on Tuesday, where it is said that Nel will "make an important announcement about his plans for the future."

It is speculated that Nel will join AfriForum to establish as private prosecuting unit within the organisation, to look into matters which the NPA decline to prosecute.

Nel resigned on Monday on 24 hours notice, after serving in the NPA for the past 35 years.

He was instrumental in a pending leave to appeal application before the Supreme Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein, in which he was set on appealing the "lenient" six year jail term meted out to Oscar Pistorius for murder.

The matter is due to be heard later this year in the SCA.
