Polokwane – Lesiba Kekana, the 37-year-old father, who was on Tuesday found guilty of killing his four young sons by slitting their throats, will be sentenced in the Limpopo High Court on Thursday.

In September last year Kekana murdered his sons in a fit of rage over their mother’s infidelity.

The Limpopo High Court in Polokwane on Tuesday postponed sentencing to afford Kekana’s legal representatives a chance to prepare arguments in mitigation of sentence.

Kekana had earlier been found guilty on four counts of murder and assault.

Kekana killed Bokang, 13, Keneilwe, 10, Hlologelo, 6, and Lekgoledi, 4, by cutting their throats.

An additional charge of assault, for an attack on his wife when he tried to hit her with an axe, was added as count five. Police said the assault case occurred four months before the children were killed.

Kekana slit his four sons’ throats with a knife minutes after he had had a telephonic argument with his wife Lorraine.

In his admission of guilt statement, Kekana admitted that he killed his children, however, he claimed that he did so as he did not want to leave them suffering as he was planning to commit suicide.

He said he cut their throats one after the other, and also forced one of the boys to phone their mother and narrate to her how his brothers were bleeding and groaning.

Kekana claimed his attempt at suicide failed and asked the court for forgiveness.

Judge Joseph Raulinga said: “The court is satisfied that the contents of the statement comply with the charges preferred against the accused and the accused is found guilty as charged.”

Raulinga postponed sentencing procedures after an application by the defence legal team.

When court adjourned Kekana asked to see his wife, but this was rejected.
