Durban - Violence and intolerance have again reared their ugly heads in Richmond, with an attack on the home of a local councillor.

Five shots were fired into councillor Jethro Jili’s Richmond home early on Monday as he, his mother and two nephews slept.

No one was injured, but the incident has left Jili and his family shaken.

SAPS Captain Thulani Zwane confirmed that a case of attempted murder was being investigated by the police.

Speaking to the Daily News on Monday, Jili said that while he refused to be forced out of his own home by criminals, he felt violated and was worried about his safety after the brazen attack.

“People may not like me for my desire to root out corruption, but I will not allow this to change who I am,” he said.

He said he believed the attack may be related to a recent investigation into the alleged misuse of funds by a certain municipal committee.

Jili said he believed he had been targeted after the appointment of a task team to investigate and monitor this committee.
