Ekuvukeni - A 50-year-old man was in police custody after being caught with several unlicensed firearms and ammunition, including an assault rifle, in Ekuvukeni, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Wednesday.

The man was arrested on Tuesday after members of the provincial crime intelligence unit, the Ladysmith tactical response team and the Ekuvukeni visible policing unit conducted an “intelligence driver operation” in the area.

“An AK47 assault rifle including ammunition and a magazine, a .303 hunting rifle including ammunition and a .38 special revolver also including ammunition were seized,” police spokesman Jay Naicker said.

“They also recovered ammunition for a R1 rifle, 9mm pistol, and .45 mm calibre firearm.“

The officers also found an unspecified amount of dagga in his possession.

The suspect had already appeared in court on charges of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, and possession of drugs.
