Durban - KwaZulu-Natal rapist Senzo Masuku, 23, was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment in the Empangeni Regional Court on Tuesday.

Masuku was also sentenced to three years for attempted rape and assault, with the sentences to run concurrently.

SAPS spokeswoman Captain Nqobile Gwala said on October 19, a 57-year-old victim was walking to her homestead near Emplotini, when the accused attacked and raped her. The matter was reported at Empangeni SAPS and transferred to Empangeni Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) for investigation.

Gwala said Masuku later attempted to rape another 58-year-old victim who was going to church. Fortunately there was a vehicle approaching in their direction and the accused ran away.

Another case of attempted rape was opened at Empangeni SAPS, and through intensive investigations Masuku was arrested and sentenced accordingly.

KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa said: “We will continue to send rapists to jail where they belong”.
