Johannesburg - A SA Police Service warrant officer appeared in the Modimolle Magistrate’s Court for allegedly assisting 13 awaiting trial prisoners to escape from the local police cells in March, Limpopo police said on Wednesday.

The 56-year-old Warrant Officer Alias Mothloki was granted bail of R1 500 bail, said police spokeswoman Colonel Ronel Otto.

“He was arrested by Modimolle detectives on Friday and appeared in court on 13 charges of aiding and abetting in the commission of crime and two of corruption following an intensive internal investigation. It is alleged that the member received a sum of money from the suspects to assist them with their escape,” she said.

The case was postponed to June 3, 2016.

Otto said nine of the 13 escaped prisoners had since been re-arrested. The 13 escaped after sawing through the mesh wire of the exercise room at the police cells in March. The search for Given Mogashone, Dennis Jove, Forgive Mgube and Collin Muleya continues. The four faced charges of armed robbery.
