Johannesburg - Limpopo police had their hands full when residents of Sendedza village outside of Thohoyandou went on rampage in search of a man suspected of killing someone in the area.

Spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe said the suspect was dragged to a local sports ground and assaulted by the community on Tuesday.

“Officers were met with a hail of stones from the community when they arrived at the sport grounds. They managed to push on and rescued the person. The situation then went out of control,” Ngoepe said on Wednesday.

“Roads were barricaded with big rocks and trees, police continued to deal with that situation until one of their vehicle was burnt to ashes and another pelted with stones, leading to serious damages on the vehicle windscreen.”

He said no community members or police officers were injured.

“A case of public violence was opened, but no arrests have been made yet. The provincial commissioner has established a task team composed of various police units who are investigating the violence and tracing all the people involved.”
