Worcester - A Western Cape man was jailed for 68 years on Tuesday for raping and robbing young women in Worcester, the National Prosecuting Authority said.

Madoda Allam was sentenced by Western Cape High Court Judge President John Hlophe in the circuit court sitting in Worcester, said NPA provincial spokesman Eric Ntabazalila.

Allam faced three counts of rape, three of sexual assault, two of robbery with aggravating circumstances, two of pointing a firearm and one of theft.

Between 2011 and last year, Allam offered women lifts in his car. He would then drive to secluded areas where he would rape and rob them.

He assaulted some of his victims and left them in unfamiliar areas in the dark.

The NPA welcomed the sentence.

“We hope it serves as a warning to other would-be criminals that if you commit crime, you will suffer the consequences,” Ntabazalila said.

“We understand that most of them (victims) still bear the scars of Allam's actions but we hope this sentence and therapeutic interventions ordered by the court will bring some closure.”

According to the NPA, Hlophe told Allam that the crimes were “serious, horrendous and heinous”.

He said Allam was evil and “like a piece of wood” in that he had no emotions, feelings, empathy or sympathy.

Hlophe ordered that Allam's name be included in the national register of sex offenders. He was also deemed unfit to possess a firearm.
