Public Protector Thuli Madonsela allegedly committed fraud and corruption while she worked for the SA Law Reform Commission (SALRC), The Star reported on Wednesday.
Companies owned by her allegedly did work for, and were paid R1.8 million by the SALRC while she was a full-time commissioner there, three years ago, according to “independent sources”.
Responding to the claims, Madonsela told The Star she never concealed her company from her employers. Her company was never paid more than R500 000 for many assignments it did for the justice department.
“I did work on the transformation of the judiciary, gender mainstreaming and the legal service charter… All of this did not reach R1.8m,” she was quoted as saying.
According to the newspaper, “several” unnamed police sources said her arrest was imminent. Police chief General Bheki Cele's office did not comment.
Madonsela was currently finalising reports about contracts police entered into to lease new headquarters in Pretoria and Durban, for R500m and R1.1 billion respectively. In her preliminary report, Madonsela found Cele guilty of maladministration for his role in the leases. - Sapa
