KwaZulu-Natal - A 25-year-old suspect was arrested on Wednesday for the rape of a 37-year-old woman, as well as robbery, which occurred in Howick at the weekend, police in KwaZulu-Natal said.

Police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said the incident occurred along Curryspot Main Road in Howick.

“It is alleged that the victim was jogging along Curryspot Road on June 13 when she was confronted by a male suspect armed with a knife, who threatened and forced the victim into the nearest bush,” said Naicker.

Naicker said the man raped her, robbed her of running shoes, digital watch, and a black long sleeve track top.

“A case of rape and robbery was opened at Howick SAPS and the victim was taken to hospital for treatment as she was visibly shaken,” said Naicker.

The case, Naicker said, was forwarded to the Howick Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) for investigation. Following an investigation by the FCS Unit, the suspect was traced and arrested.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court soon.

Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended the swift arrest, saying: “We will not rest until the suspect is convicted for this horrendous crime. It is unacceptable that a woman cannot walk or jog in our neighbourhoods without fear, and we will do everything within our control to ensure that this man does not harm another woman again.”
