Wartburg, KwaZulu-Natal - A 25-year-old man is to appear in the New Hanover Magistrate's Court on Thursday for raping a 94-year-old woman, police said on Wednesday.

Police spokesman Captain Thulani Zwane said she was attacked and raped in her home in the Emabheleni area, near the town of Wartburg in KwaZulu-Natal in the early hours of last Saturday.

Members of the African National Congress were planning a protest outside the court.

ANC provincial secretary Sihle Zikalala said his information was that the man had recently been released on parole when he allegedly committed the crime.

“Scores of ANC members will demonstrate outside the New Hanover Magistrate’s Court to demand that bail be denied,” said Zikalala.

“The ANC condemns this barbaric act in the strongest possible terms.”
