Cape Town – A 31-year-old man taken in for questioning in connection with the murder of an 11-year-old girl in Mitchell's Plain has been arrested and charged, Western Cape police said on Thursday.

Stacha Arendse, from Tafelsig, went missing on Monday morning. Her body was found in a field the following day. It's believed the suspect is a man who knew the girl's family.

"The 31-year-old man will appear in the Mitchell’s Plain Magistrate's Court tomorrow, 31 March 2017, and remains in police custody," Constable Noloyiso Rwexana said.

"We urge the community not to take the law into their own hands but to allow the SAPS to do their work and bring the suspect before court."

Arendse's body was found more than a week after the body of 13-year-old Rene Roman, who went missing on March 10, was discovered. Roman's decomposed body was found in a shed near her family home in Lavender Hill on March 21 – Human Rights Day.
