Cape Town - A man accused of murdering a Mitchell’s Plain pub owner has confessed to robbing and shooting him.
Donald Conrad, 37, made his first appearance at the Mitchell’s Plain Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of murder and attempted murder.
Conrad also faces a charge of robbery with aggravating circumstances.
He was arrested in Mitchell’s Plain on Saturday after a community member reported him and identified him as the suspected killer of Calvin “Kabolie” Goliath, 65.
The vehicle, a VW Golf MK2 which police believe was used during the murder, was also seized.
Two other suspects as well as the murder weapon are still being sought by police.
Goliath was the owner of Premium Sports Bar and Dagbreek Liquors in Westridge.
He was shot and killed outside his business on Thursday morning, while sitting in his car.
One of the robbers shot him while the other robbed him.
A motorist who saw the attack opened fire on the suspects, who shot back before they fled in the red Golf.
On Monday, as Conrad stepped into the dock, dressed in a jeans and a hoodie, he informed the court he would be applying for legal aid.
However, soon after that Magistrate Walter Golding heard he had already given detectives a confession.
Top police sources reveal the confession had been made shortly after his arrest, wherein he allegedly admitted to shooting and robbing Goliath.
The prosecutor did not reveal any more details.
Conrad is expected to apply for bail on June 13.
Golding stressed the seriousness of the crime committed.
“So this was a robbery with a firearm, robbery with aggravating circumstances,” said Golding.
“This would be a Schedule 6, not 5. The State will be leading the confession with the bail application.”
Golding informed Conrad he would remain in custody and reprimanded him before he was led away: “Take your hands out of your pockets, you will remain in custody.”
Conrad turned around in the dock and waved at his relatives.
None of Goliath’s family were present at court.
It was Goliath’s daughter-in-law, who also works at the pub, who found him dying on the pavement on Thursday.
