Cape Town - Police are trying to piece together the circumstances which led to a young man being shot and killed on the sand dunes at Monwabisi Beach.
Police spokesman Captain FC van Wyk said the man had been found dead in the sparsely vegetated dunes just off Baden Powell Drive.
The man, who is believed to be in his late 20s or early 30s, had been found at about 3pm on Tuesday by members of the Harare police station.
An eyewitness told police that he had seen a black Toyota Avanza park nearby.
Five men had got out of the car and gone up the hill, but only four of them had returned to the car and driven off, he said.
“The witness then went looking for the fifth person and found the victim shot dead,” Van Wyk said.
Sources told the Cape Argus the man had been killed by a shot through the mouth.
An empty taxi stood abandoned in a nearby parking lot.
Van Wyk said a 23-year-old man had been arrested on the scene, but a possible link between the crime and the taxi was unclear.
Police were still hunting for three more suspects.
The Cape Argus spoke to the owner of the taxi, who said he was in the Ciskei region of the Eastern Cape, and could not comment.
The 23-year-old had not been charged at the time of going to press today, nor had the murdered man been identified.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111, Van Wyk said.
