King William’s Town – Butterworth police on Tuesday called on elderly women not to live alone after they arrested a man for raping a 76-year-old woman.

Police Captain Jackson Manatha said the 25-year-old man was expected to appear in the Centane Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

Manatha said the man was arrested on Monday at the Qolweni Locality in Gcina village, Centane.

He said the victim was alone at home when the suspect allegedly forced open her door in the early hours of Saturday morning.

“The suspect grabbed and strangled the 76-year-old granny. He then allegedly raped the victim.”

He added: “We are appealing to all the elderly women not to stay alone as they become victims of crime”.
