Butterworth - A man who allegedly raped a 13-year-old girl was arrested at Dyushu Village in Butterworth, Eastern Cape police said on Wednesday.

“The teenager was on her way to a shopping complex next to Ndabakazi station when she came across the man last Thursday afternoon,” said Captain Jackson Manatha.

The man offered the teenager a R2 coin and when she refused it, he attacked her, dragged her to a field and raped her. He threatened the teenager and told her not to tell anyone about the incident.

Manatha said it was not clear how community members learned of the incident, but they went to the man's home to confront him on Tuesday.

“They called the police, who came and arrested him immediately,” he said.

The 59-year-old man was charged with rape and will appear in the Butterworth Magistrate's Court on Thursday. - Sapa
