Johannesburg - An elderly man was shot allegedly trying to protect his family early on Wednesday morning at his Meredale home.

ER24 paramedic spokeswoman Chitra Bodasing said a group of armed robbers entered the property at about 3am.

The gang accosted the 66-year-old, shot and killed him.

“Paramedics found him with head injuries,” said Bodasing.

While he was declared dead at the scene, his relatives escaped unscathed. It is unclear whether anything was stolen or if arrests had been made.

In Alberton, an elderly man was found dead in his car this morning on the R59 near the Michelle Avenue off-ramp.

“ER24 paramedics found the vehicle on the side of the road in the bushes,” said Bodasing.

She said they had to break the windows to remove him.

The motorist was believed to have died following a medical-related condition. Also, an apparent hijacking on Tuesday night left a motorist in a critical condition.

His bullet-riddled body was found by paramedics in the veld alongside the Golden Highway near Vlakfontein.

Bodasing said the man, believed to be in his thirties, was thought to have been shot by the hijackers and left to die.

Meanwhile, another man is recovering after a tanker exploded in Chloorkop near Edenvale in Ekurhuleni on Tuesday.

ER24 spokesman Werner Vermaak said the 44-year-old sustained critical injuries after the tanker he was cleaning went up in flames, then exploded.

In Roodepoort, an infant's body was found in Florida Lake on Tuesday.

The cause of death is being investigated.
