Pietermaritzburg - Pietermaritzburg police have arrested two suspects after a man was shot dead during an argument with a group causing a disturbance outside his property.

Members of the Pietermaritzburg police combined action team believe that the two men they arrested on Saturday night on suspicion of murder are also linked to other criminal cases under investigation.

Mountain Rise police station spokesman, Warrant Officer Joshua Maistry, said on Monday that two cars with about 10 men in them were parked outside a house at the Pakkies informal settlement in Copesville, causing a disturbance.

The owner of the property they were parked in front of, Sibusisi Shange, 30, asked them to be quiet because they were causing a disturbance and an argument ensued which very quickly became violent.

Other residents heard the commotion and investigated.

Firearms were drawn and shots fired. Shange was shot in the head and died. A friend, who also came out because of the noise, saw what had happened and fired in the direction of the men. A suspect believed to have been involved in the initial shooting, was shot three times and was recovering in hospital.

Police arrested two suspects, aged 32 and 41, in connection with Shange’s murder. A 9mm Norinco firearm containing four live rounds was seized and seven spent cartridges were recovered.

More arrests were imminent, said Maistry.
