Johannesburg - The Douglasdale community is shaken after a home invasion on Thursday evening left a husband and father of three dead.

According to Warrant Officer Balan Muthan, the Douglasdale police spokesman, two men broke into the home while the family were eating supper. “They removed the children and put them in a separate room. The male victim and his wife were put into the kitchen

“The suspects then shot the male victim twice and he succumbed to his wounds,” Muthan said.

He said the circumstances surrounding the shooting were still unclear. “We have senior investigators who are processing the scene as there is a lot of forensic evidence. A manhunt is under way to find the men,” Muthan added.

A laptop, jewellery and cash were stolen and it is also believed the men tried to steal a car but were unsuccessful. Advocate Jean Berdou, the chairman of the Douglasdale Community Policing Forum (CPF), said the two men had fled the scene on foot.

“There is a large investigation in progress. It was initially thought to be a possible hijacking but this wasn’t the prime cause,” he said. Berdou said he was unable to comment further because of the sensitivity of the investigation and to give the family privacy.
