Welkom - Free State police have launched a manhunt for two rapists after a woman was attacked in Welkom.

In a statement on Tuesday, police spokesperson Captain Stephen Thakeng said a 21-year-old woman and her younger brother were on their way to Steyn 2 shaft mine in Welkom to look for their father on Saturday evening at about 5:30pm.

“Suddenly two men approached them and they both had a gun and knife. They threatened both the complainant and her brother. They forcefully took the young woman to the bushes and took turns raping her and ran away,” Thakeng said.

He has appealed to the community to assist in tracking down the suspects, both of whom were Sotho speaking.

Identikits of the men have been drawn up - one is light in complexion, of medium build and has a scar above his right eye and on his chin. The other suspect is dark in complexion, has acne on his face and is of slender build.

Anyone with information can contact Detective Warrant Officer Mandie Jacobs on 057 391 6186 during office hours or 071 679 0988.
