The public protector has subpoenaed KwaZulu-Natal Traditional Affairs MEC Nomusa Dube to explain why she has refused to take action against a Durban traditional leader who is believed to be the cause of a succession squabble at the Nazareth Baptist Church (Shembe).

The public protector ordered Dube to appear before her on June 21.

She wants Dube to explain why she has not taken action against Inkosi Mqoqi Ngcobo of AmaQadi Traditional Authority, near Inanda, north of Durban.

Late last year, the public protector ordered Dube to take disciplinary action against Ngcobo for causing mayhem in the church.

“You have repeatedly been required to act in terms of the KZN Traditional Leadership and Governance Act, 2005, regarding a complaint that has been brought to your office regarding the alleged conduct of Inkosi Ngcobo… to provide valid reason(s) for your reluctance/failure to act in the circumstances where the law requires action on your part,” read the letter to Dube.

The Shembe succession battle is currently under way in the Durban High Court.
