The media will be allowed conditional access to observe the Film and Publication Board's hearing on Brett Murray's “The Spear” painting, it said on Friday.

“The Film and Publication Board has acceded to requests made by the representatives of City Press, Goodman Gallery, and Avusa Media to allow members of the media access to the classification committee meeting to be held on 29 May 2012.”

It would only hear representations from those three parties.

Last week, before the painting was vandalised, five members of the board viewed the work, which depicts President Jacob Zuma with exposed genitals.

The committee intends classifying the painting in line with the Film and Publications Act, and section one of the Act, which includes paintings in the definition of publications.

The board's previous attempt to hold the classification hearing was called off because the parties were not given enough notice to prepare.

The board's visit to the gallery followed the receipt of several complaints about the painting. – Sapa
