Durban - The manager of the Pietermaritzburg High Court may be able to wriggle out of a legal bind after being charged with theft.

Bhekumuzi Mtshali appeared briefly in the city’s district court on Wednesday, charged with stealing a tow eye cover last month off a BMW parked at the Liberty Midlands Mall. The car belongs to a policeman, Rajeev Soorajbally.

The case was adjourned to September 15 for possible mediation. If Soorajbally agrees, Mtshali could get off without having a criminal record entered against his name if he undergoes certain social programmes.

The Daily News established that

CCTV footage from the mall parking lot forms part of the case against Mtshali, and shows the court manager allegedly waiting to deliberately park his vehicle next to Soorajbally’s BMW, and then removing the tow eye cover and placing it on his own car.

The cover, situated on the bumper of the BMW, is specifically colour-coded to the car and costs about R1 000.

Mtshali, who is married with three children and earns R25 000 a month, indicated he intended pleading guilty.

He is out on bail of R500.
