Johannesburg - An Ekurhuleni metro police officer has been shot dead in Brakpan, spokesman Superintendent Vusi Mabanga said on Monday.

Mabanga said the officer, Popi Simphiwe Maseko, was shot dead on Sunday - allegedly by a man arrested for drunk driving at an accident scene.

“This shocking incident happened while Maseko and a colleague were preparing to take the suspect to the Pholosong Hospital to draw a blood sample.”

He said the man fled the scene and was arrested on Monday in Tsakane. He was expected to appear in the Brakpan Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

Mabanga said Maseko was the second officer to die in the line of duty in Ekurhuleni recently.

“The other officer was run over by a vehicle while trying to stop it on the N3 free way last month.” - Sapa
