A Tshwane metro police officer accused of raping a man and stealing his cellphone was granted bail of R1000 by the Pretoria North Magistrate's Court on Monday.

The 29-year-old officer was arrested on Friday night, said Lieutenant Colonel Tshisikhawe Ndou.

The officer picked up a 26-year-old man - not a woman, as was initially reported - and they went out together for drinks.

Ndou said the officer offered to drive the man home afterwards, but on the way stopped and raped him, then left him at the side of the road.

The man walked to the Moot police station where he reported what had happened.

A Tshwane community safety spokesperson said he could not comment on the incident because it was before the courts.

However, he said disciplinary proceedings against the officer would start on Tuesday.

The court case against the officer, who faces charges of rape and theft, was postponed until April 6. -
