Footballer Bryce Moon is to stand trial for murder and drunk driving in June.

The charges relate to the death of Mavis Ncube.

She was struck on a bend in Katherine Street, Sandton, when Moon was returning from a party in Sandhurst held to celebrate Bafana Bafana’s performance during the Confederations Cup on June 29, 2009.

She died after she was turned away from two hospitals, according to reports at the time.

The matter was provisionally struck off the roll in April last year because the police wanted more time to investigate.

The 25-year-old was told at the Randburg Magistrate’s Court yesterday that investigations had been concluded and the matter was back on the roll.

Moon is facing an alternative charge of culpable homicide and the second charge is driving under the influence, alternatively having a blood alcohol level exceeding the statutory limit. The third charge is negligent and reckless driving, alternatively driving without consideration.

At the time of the accident, Moon was signed up with Greek football team Panathinaikos.

Initial reports in the Sowetan were that he had been charged with culpable homicide after a blood sample was taken.

“I did drink two beers at the party, but I was not drunk. The accident was unfortunate because the two ladies ran in different directions and the direction I chose happened to be the one where the lady ran to,” Moon was quoted as saying after the accident.

In a court appearance that lasted less than a minute yesterday, magistrate Vincent Pienaar informed the Golden Arrows player that his trial had been set down for three days, commencing on June 1.
