Durban - Newlands mother-of-four, Selvie Devnunan, 56, was stabbed to death while walking to a bus stop in New Centre Drive in Newlands East, 400m from her home on Saturday.

Her adult children said their mother left home at 6am to be at work by 7am.

Her son, Anesh Devnunan, 21, said she should have woken him up to escort her to the bus stop.

He said his mother was stabbed twice, in her back and chest.

“We travel to work together, but I was off this weekend. On Friday night I told my mom to wake me up so I could accompany her to the bus stop,” he said.

Anesh, the youngest child, said his mother had moved to his house from Earlsfield to live closer to work.

She worked as a machinist at a shoe factory and was robbed of her handbag, cellphone and an undisclosed amount of cash.

“Crime here is high, although it is hard to believe that someone would be so brazen as to murder a person in broad daylight. I hope the person who did this to my mother gets what is due to him. My mother was a loving person and did not deserve to die in this manner,” he said.

Devnunan was a single mother who also took care of her 29-year-old physically disabled son, Neresh.

SAPS Hindu Chaplin, Pundit Satish Maharaj, who drove past minutes after the incident said the family would be offered trauma counselling.
