Cape Town - The teen accused of murdering his girlfriend’s mother may have spent his last night in prison as his bail application was approved on Monday.
Kyle Maspero, 18, was expected to leave Pollsmoor Prison on Tuesday morning after being detained for six months – during which he claimed he was violently assaulted and victimised.
Magistrate Crystal McKenna set his bail at R3 000 at Simon’s Town Magistrate’s Court after judging that the teen was not a flight risk, did not pose a danger and would not interfere with evidence or witnesses.
Maspero’s brother-in-law, Oliver Grundy, was present in court on Monday. The two hugged and exchanged smiles when bail was approved.
Outside court Grundy said Maspero would be “showered with love” when he got home.
Grundy also rang Maspero’s brother, Dylan Handel, who was en route from Knysna to Cape Town as Maspero was taken in for one more night in jail until his trial.
He was expected to pay the bail and pick Maspero up at Pollsmoor Prison this morning.
Maspero is accused of strangling Rosemary Theron in her Clovelly home in March last year while her daughter, Phoenix Racing Cloud Theron, hugged her.
The young couple were allegedly under the influence of drugs at the time of the murder.
