Durban - Well-known paramedic Santosh Mohan was found dead in his response vehicle just metres away from his Newlands West home on Monday afternoon.

Mohan, 39, an advanced life-support paramedic for Accimed Medical Response, which is based in Phoenix, sustained wounds to his neck.

His employer Vicky Januk said Mohan had taken the weekend off, but kept the response vehicle because he was on call.

“On Monday, around 1pm, our control room received a call informing us that one of our vehicles had been parked at the side of the road in Dawn West for some time. I knew it was Santosh’s vehicle and I went out with the team.”

Januk found Mohan’s body slumped between the driver and passenger seats. “I was devastated. Although we go out on accident and murder scenes all the time, when it’s your own it’s most difficult,” he said. “Police have taken the vehicle in for finger print testing and to look for other evidence.”

Januk described Mohan, who was unmarried, as one of the best in the industry.

“He worked for me part-time for three months and this month (he) was employed as a full-time paramedic. Before that he worked overseas and at other local companies.”

An inquest docket has been opened.
