Durban - The investigations into who dropped off a litter of puppies on a busy Durban freeway have hit a dead end.

Durban resident, Vicki Penrose, has been inundated with calls from concerned animal lovers after she saw a motorist dump a box containing puppies along the N2 freeway.

Penrose told the Daily News on Monday that investigations had been halted.

“The number plates on the vehicle were false. They went to the house which the number plate was registered to, but the vehicle they found was a white bakkie. The Kloof and Highway SPCA were handling the matter with police,” Penrose said.

Last week Penrose saw the driver of a white Mercedes Benz C200 dump a dog and her puppies on the N2 freeway south near the M7 intersection Solomon Mahlangu (Edwin Swales VC) Drive.

Penrose managed to take down the number plate and reported the matter to the SPCA, who in turn reported it to police.

The mother and all but one of the puppies were run over by passing cars. Penrose rescued and adopted the surviving black retriever puppy.
