Pretoria - Cases of attempted murder and attempted robbery was opened on Wednesday following a shooting incident involving Nigeria’s deputy ambassador to South Africa and his wife outside a private residence in Monument Park.

Between 6am and 7am on Wednesday, the deputy ambassador, his wife and their driver arrived at the residence in Orient Street.

As the vehicle entered the property, another vehicle stopped behind the deputy ambassador’s car.

An attacker got out of the other vehicle and opened fire on the deputy ambassador’s vehicle.

“The deputy ambassador’s driver returned fire and was shot in the hand during the shoot-out.

“The deputy ambassador and his wife were not injured,” said Brigadier Phuti Setati, acting national head of corporate communications for the SAPS.

The attackers sped off immediately.

A stray bullet damaged a neighbour’s window during the shoot-out.

Police were summoned to the scene and are investigating the incident.

It is not yet known who the attackers were, how many there were, whether they were injured, or where they were from.

Police could not rule out that the car might have followed the deputy ambassador’s vehicle.

It could not be confirmed if it was their residence or whether or not anyone was inside the house at the time of the incident.

Efforts to get comment from the Nigerian Embassy yesterday were fruitless.
