Cape Town - The police and Hawks released Pagad member Zakariyah Albertyn without charge on Wednesday morning after about 36 hours of detention and questioning.

Albertyn was arrested and taken in for questioning in connection with a triple murder in Athlone on Tuesday last week.

Pagad leader Abdus Salaam Ebrahim was arrested last week at his home in Athlone after the murder of the three Tanzanian men, who were shot by a group of men wearing balaclavas at a shop in Veld Road.

Ebrahim, who is remanded in custody at Goodwood Prison, is due to appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court on Thursday for his bail application.

Pagad said on Wednesday that its legal representatives had been informed that all charges against Ebrahim would be dropped.

There has been a number of bombings at car dealerships and homes in Athlone and other Cape Flats neighbourhoods in recent weeks.

Three of these happened either during or after Pagad motorcade events in areas close to where these events occurred.

In other instances, the targets of the bombings were known drug houses, according to neighbours on the scene.

Pagad has denied involvement in all of these incidents.

Another Pagad motorcade was scheduled to take place in Athlone on Wednesday night.
