Johannesburg -

Deirdré Lemmer wasn’t yet ready to say goodbye.

That is why her son Vincent’s ashes were in the box on a dressing table in her room.

When she was ready, she planned to scatter the ashes at Ponta Malongane in Mozambique. This is the place where her son used to scuba dive with his father, Reds.

But on Saturday, the unimaginable happened. Burglars broke into the Lemmer house in Weltevreden Park, Roodepoort, and stole the box.

Now Deirdré and Reds are hoping the burglars will return the box with the ashes.

“They can leave it on the wall of our house or in the driveway; they know where we live,” said Reds.

The burglary happened just after 11am on Saturday when three men lifted the gate off the railing, then broke through the front door. In 10 minutes they stole a number of electronic goods and Vincent’s ashes.

Vincent, 21, drowned last December while diving in a pool. The cause of his death, was believed to have been shallow water blackout.

Deirdré described the box as being about the size of a brick. Inscribed on the lid is “Vincent Casper Lemmer” with his nickname, “Fizz”.
