Port Elizabeth – Port Elizabeth police in the Eastern Cape have arrested a gang member for a shooting incident which took place in the city's northern areas earlier this month.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said on Monday that a 19-year-old man was arrested at a house in Guava Street in Jacksonville early on Sunday night by the Provincial Gang Investigation Unit.

This was the unit’s second gang bust for the day following separate shooting incidents. Naidu said the suspect allegedly shot a 22-year-old man in the mouth earlier this month.

The suspect was detained on a charge of attempted murder and will appear in court on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, police are investigating a case of attempted murder after a 14-year-old boy was shot in Helenvale over the weekend.

Naidu said the teenager was walking with a friend when they heard the sound of a gunshot.

"As the boys started running, the victim felt a burning sensation in his back. He ran into a house in Old Standford Road. He sustained a gunshot wound to his back. He was taken to hospital for treatment. The injured teenager is an innocent person and the incident is not gang related," said Naidu.

No arrests have been made.
