Durban - KwaZulu-Natal police have appealed to the public to come forward with information into the death of Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) ward candidate Alson Nkosi who died last week Thursday.

In a statement released on Wednesday, police said they were appealing to witnesses to come forward as there had been allegations in the media that the car Nkosi was travelling in was shot at before it overturned.

Police said there was no evidence at the scene to indicate any shooting had occurred.

The 44-year-old Nkosi was the IFP’s candidate for Ward 3 in Abaqulusi Municipality.

He was travelling in a Golf with five other passengers when the driver allegedly lost control and rolled the car. Siyabonga Masondo was declared dead at the scene while Nkosi and the other passengers were rushed to hospital, where Nkosi died.

A case of culpable homicide was opened at the Hlobane police station.

“We are requesting that those persons who have information to support these allegations please come forward so that the validity of these claims can be tested,” said the statement.

Allegations that alcohol was found at the scene and that the driver was under the influence of alcohol would also be investigated.

The cause of death would only be determined when post mortem results had been received.

After the incident, the IFP’s Blessed Gwala said that Nkosi had been shot.

Anyone with information that can assist police in the investigation should contact the provincial head of detectives, Brigadier Cliffy Marion on 082 459 2806.
