Durban - KwaZulu-Natal’s Department of Correctional Services has warned people against paying money to people for the promise of jobs at the department.

Unsuspecting victims had been shelling out R2 000 and R3 000 to get jobs.

Department spokesman Thulani Mdluli said on Wednesday that last year more than 50 people had either called or gone to the department offices to enquire about the jobs they had been promised.

“Some come here from various parts of the province saying they are here to resume their new jobs. We don’t sell jobs to potential candidates, and the interviewing process applies to all,” Mdluli said.

The scam is prevalent in the Dundee, Glencoe and Newcastle areas. Early this month, the department was alerted to an advertisement for correctional officers in Glencoe.

“The advert was brought to our attention and we warn people to stop throwing their money away.

“These cases are difficult to solve because when we offer to assist people opening criminal charges, they become reluctant. The reason is they realise they are complicit to criminal activity,” he said.
