Durban - Police are investigating a case of arson after six Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) buses were burned late on Friday night.

“The cause or motive of the burning of the buses is not yet known by MUT management but the university has been locked in meetings with the service provider to come up with a solution,” the institution said in a statement on Sunday.

“On Friday night, six buses parked outside the faculty of natural sciences campus were burnt. There were initially 15 busses parked outside the campus and of the 15, the service provider had collected eight that were to be parked at the MUT Seme Hall on the main campus.”

The remaining buses were parked outside the faculty of natural sciences campus as usual, to deal with the morning rush of students coming to campus for the computer laboratories and library, among others, on weekends.

Management urged anyone with any information about the incident to come forward. The owners of the buses, the Gcaba brothers, had assured the institution that the service to ferry students to and from campus would not be disrupted. The service provider had assured the MUT and its students that additional buses would be made available.

The university council would hold an emergency meeting on Monday to discuss the way forward, and other matters. Details of the investigation would be made known once it had been concluded, the MUT said.
