Mahikeng, North West - The death of a protester in Mahikeng in North West is being investigated, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) said on Friday.

Spokesman Moses Dlamini said the 27-year-old man was shot dead and allegedly run over by a police vehicle during a service delivery protest on Wednesday.

“At this stage the investigation is still underway and none of the allegations can be confirmed. Once more investigative work has been done, the exact facts surrounding the matter will emerge,” he said.

On Wednesday, Brigadier Thulani Ngubane declined to confirm or deny a report that police shot at the man with rubber bullets.

“I don't know (about the cause of death), all I'm saying (is) let us just allow the (IPID) to do their job.”

The IPID was awaiting the outcome of a post-mortem, Dlamini said. - Sapa
