Four men were arrested on Friday for public violence at the Dilokong Chrome Mine in Mecklenburg, near Sekhukhune in Limpopo, police said.
This brought to 11 the number of people arrested since Tuesday during service delivery protests in the area, said Lieutenant-Colonel Ronel Otto.
She said violence erupted at the mine on Tuesday night when people barricaded roads with stones and burning tyres.
They were demanding the mine provide tarred roads, a training centre, and schools.
“The mob threw stones at security guards and damaged two bakkies and trucks by setting them alight at the entrance of the mine,” said Otto.
Three of the protesters, including a 17-year-old youth, were arrested on Wednesday and appeared in the Burgersfort Magistrate's Court on Thursday.
The youth was instructed to undergo evaluation by social workers. The case was postponed until December 1.
“Eight members of the group will appear in the Burgersfort Magistrate's Court on Monday to answer charges of public violence and malicious damage to property,” said Otto. – Sapa
