A 22-year-old man was arrested on Saturday after throwing a six-week-old puppy into a fire, burning its paws and stomach.

Jenny Gird, chairwoman of the Overberg Petcare Society, said the incident had happened on Drostersnes Proefplaas Vyeboomnear Villiersdorp. She said the man had appeared in the Caledon Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

“The puppy has been named Blitz and is recovering slowly.”

Gird said the puppy had second-degree burns and was being looked after by Dr Rene Perold of the Onrus Veterinary Clinic.

She said that when he recovered, they would be looking for a new home for him.
