Johannesburg -

A 10-year-old girl's parents will appear in the Bloemfontein Regional Court on Friday for allegedly forcing her to practise sport extensively.

The Volksblad newspaper reported that the primary school pupil's 38-year-old mother and her 31-year-old husband appeared in the Bloemfontein Regional Court on Monday on charges of attempted murder and child neglect.

The magistrate reportedly told the woman that a further charge of assault brought against her carried a minimum prison sentence of 10 years for a first offender.

According to the newspaper, the couple allegedly made the girl swim in the Krugerdrift dam, outside Bloemfontein, assaulting her and forcing her to continue swimming even when she was tired.

She was reportedly now in foster care. - Sapa
