Durban - An alleged rabble-rouser has been barred from taking part in any protest action in the future.

This was after he appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday on charges of public violence.

CCTV footage apparently captured 30-year-old Sipho Mbuthuma throwing stones at an Engen garage in Inanda Road during the violent protests that erupted in Durban earlier this week.

Magistrate Mahomed Motala took a firm stance, citing the “ongoing strife” in the city.

“I’m reluctant to accede because of what’s going on in our city in terms of damage to property and mass demonstrations,” he said, “But the State is not opposed to your bail.”

He granted Mbuthuma R1 000 bail and said a “very strict, special” condition would be imposed on him and he was not to engage in any mass or individual protest activity.

“If you fail to abide by this, your bail will be forfeited and it is highly unlikely you will be granted bail again,” Motala said.

On Monday, violent protesters closed down parts of Durban and caused millions of rand in damage by burning cars and damaging buildings.

One man was shot and wounded. Chris Hani (North Coast) Road, Nandi Drive in Newlands East and Quarry Heights, the M19, Electron Road and Mountbatten Drive were all affected.

Community members said the protests were due to dissatisfaction with the selection of ANC ward councillor candidates for the August elections.
