Johannesburg - What began as a relaunch party for vernacular radio station Motsweding FM ended in tragedy with two people dead.
One of the station’s hosts allegedly hit two brothers, aged 9 and between 20 and 25 – while driving his silver Audi at about 5am in Mmabatho Extension 38 on Sunday.
The 30-year-old driver had left the station’s “Big Reveal Music Festival” at the Mmabatho Stadium in North West.
“It is alleged the driver hit the boys, who were walking with their mother on their way to church. It is further alleged that the silver Audi went (on to) collide with a maroon Toyota Corolla that was in front of it, and hit a rock and eventually stopped,” Brigadier Thulane Ngubane said on Sunday.
The driver reportedly fled the scene, leaving behind a female passenger. Neither the mother nor the passenger were said to have been injured.
“The suspect eventually handed himself over to the police at about 11am with his legal representative,” Ngubane said
Police are investigating two counts of culpable homicide, as well as charges of reckless and/or negligent driving, drunken driving, failure to ascertain injuries and to assist where the person(s) were killed.
“The female passenger was not arrested, but she’ll form part of the investigation,” Ngubane said.
Police have declined to reveal the identity of the man until he appears in the Mmabatho Magistrate’s Court soon.
