Johannesburg - Two Madadeni rape suspects, who were on the run for eight months, have been arrested in what is a major breakthrough for the Newcastle Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit, the police said on Tuesday.

The suspects aged 18 and 20 years, appeared in the Madadeni Magistrate’s Court on 4 February and the case was remanded until Thursday, 11 February for further investigation.

A 49-year-old woman was walking to work on 17 June 2015 when she was approached by two men who allegedly assaulted and raped her before taking her cellphone.

Once a case of rape and robbery was opened at the Madadeni police station, the Newcastle FCS started their investigation and their hard work finally paid off when the two suspects were arrested last Wednesday.

The cellphone stolen from the woman was also recovered during the arrest.

KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni said that he commends the Newcastle FCS for “a job well done”.

“Establishment of such a unit is a sign that the police will leave no stone unturned to those abusing vulnerable women and children in our province”.
