More than 20 shops owned by Pakistanis have been raided by disgruntled residents in Viljoenskroon, Free State police said on Thursday.

Colonel Maselela Langa said residents looted, stoned, and burned down the 24 shops on Wednesday night.

No injuries were reported and no arrests had been made.

Langa said residents were angry that they had not received their RDP houses.

He said the raided shops were not in RDP houses and none of the attacked nationals owned RDP houses.

The situation was calm on Thursday afternoon but police were keeping watch.

“We will be monitoring the situation as we suspect they (residents) will only start again at night,” he said. - Sapa
