Johannesburg - The Labour Court has issued an interdict preventing Sanral contracted workers from protesting on the N1 freeway in Midrand.

Service Provider, Teti Traffic approached the court on Tuesday in Johannesburg after its employees blocked the highway earlier causing traffic backlogs during peak hour.

The workers will now only be able to protest outside the Sanral offices. The company said it did not want to prevent the workers from taking part in the action, but only sought to deter chaos and disruptions.

Close to 200 workers affiliated to the South African Transport and Allied Workers Union were still picketing near Sanral premises, throwing rocks on to the road before handing over a memorandum.

They are demanding salary increases dating back four years and other benefits.

One employee who asked to remain anonymous said he had worked for the company for 5 years and has no medical aid or pension fund.

“I have two kids and a wife to look after and I used to earn R2 500. My salary increased to R4 300 in 2012. But how do I live off of that,” he said.

Satawu spokesperson Zanele Sabela indicated that employees work up to 12 hours a day, with no over time granted to them.

The company said the workers demands will be looked into.
