Johannesburg - Gauteng health department chief director of risk management and internal controls Abbey Marokoane has been dismissed, the department said on Wednesday.

Spokesman Prince Hamnca said Marokoane was suspended on December 9 following allegations of serious misconduct.

“This followed his arrest, appearing at the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court in Pretoria on 28 November 2014, and being granted bail,” he said.

“A disciplinary hearing was finalised at the end of January 2015 which found him guilty of a number of charges including gross dishonesty.”

Marokoane was sacked last month.

“The department views the transgressions of this senior official in a serious light.”

The Democratic Alliance in Gauteng said it welcomed the dismissal.

“I am pleased that the department has acted swiftly in this case, unlike other cases where officials are suspended with pay for long periods of time,” DA spokesman Jack Bloom said.
