Johannesburg - Limpopo police on Wednesday arrested seven people in connection with the violence that saw a state vehicle burnt to ashes and another damaged at Sendedza village near Thohoyandou.

“The men are aged between 23 and 45 years were charged with public violence and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm. More arrests are expected as the special task team was still tracing other suspects,” said spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe.

Residents of Sendedza village went on rampage on Tuesday night in search of a man suspected of killing someone in the area.

Police said the suspected murderer was dragged to a local sports ground and assaulted by the community. Officers who attended to the incident were met with a hail of stones from the community when they arrived.

“They managed to push on and rescued the person. The situation then went out of control,” Ngoepe said earlier on Wednesday.

“Roads were barricaded with big rocks and trees, police continued to deal with that situation until one of their vehicle was burnt to ashes and another pelted with stones, leading to serious damages on the vehicle windscreen.”

The suspects will appear in court soon.
